Facebook announced today that beginning in January 2015 they will reduce overly promotional page posts in the News Feed. Read the news release here.
A quote from the article “…Pages that post promotional creative should expect their organic distribution to fall significantly over time.”
Examples they provide include:
1)Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app
2)Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context
3)Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads
These are specifically the types of posts that users have told them in surveys that they don’t like to see. Beginning in January you’ll probably want to pay to promote posts that are promotional in nature. From a user perspective this is really the way it should be. It’s they way any other traditional advertising medium works. Only the advertising you purchase on Facebook is much more targeted, much more flexible, much more efficient and much less expensive than a lot of traditional media.
What I love the most about Facebook is their interest in keeping the user engaged and satisfied. In the end, it makes the product better for the advertiser. Would you agree?
